In Japan, when you addressed someone (especially higher
rank than you), formally you should always start with his/her family name followed by the title regards, e.g. Yabunaka Shihan. However, it is very common in North America to call the title followed by the family
name, e.g. Shihan Yabunaka. In some situation, they preferred you to call his/her first name with the title, e.g. Alan Shihan or Shihan Alan.
In general, you could simply call Shihan or Sensei. This is also acceptable. It is just more
polite to address with his/her name.
Notes: Hanshi, Kyoshi and Renshi are the official
titles of the master. It is not polite to call oneˇ¦s official titles. For example, you should use ˇ§Yabunaka Shihanˇ¨ or ˇ§Shihan Yabunakaˇ¨, but you will never call him Kyoshi Yabunaka. This is impolite.
